State police say a New Jersey man was killed when two tires flew off a tractor-trailer and smashed through the windshield of his minivan in Philadelphia.

State police say 64-year-old Maurizio Bertoli of Keansburg, N.J., was driving north on Interstate 95 about 2 p.m. Thursday when the pair of tires came off the trailer of a southbound flatbed truck and bounced across the highway.

Bertoli was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say his wife, 62-year-old Laura Bertoli, suffered minor injuries.

Lt. David Buckley says state police have impounded both vehicles for investigation.

Officials say the 40-year-old driver of the tractor trailer, Willie Benjamin, of Washington D.C.,was given a routine blood test.

No charges have been filed.

Re: passing of Maurizio Bertoli

Thats terrible. Maurizio and his wife Laura were one of the nicest people I met. It's crazy to think that I just talked on the phone with him last week. Well my prayer will go out to his family.

He will be greatly missed by me personally. I always loved his boldness and color. He was awesome for our industry, someone who literally loved his work. What will we do without him...

Re: passing of Maurizio Bertoli

It's a shame to loose an icon of the stone industry. I never met the man personally but had alot of respect for him. My heart and prayers go out to Laura and family.

Beyond a gift for expressing complex geological processes in a way that's understandable to a 20 something year old fabricator or to any consumer who wondered onto "findstone",

Maurizio, had heart and wisdom about life in general. Having never met me or spoken to me other than through e-mails; Maurizio was still willing and able to help me through a hard time in my life recently.

The man was brilliant to say the least and every post he ever droped on findstone.com was rock solid and consistent . I'm really going to miss him.

Maurizio Bertoli-Dead?

Is this about MB Stonecare's Maurizio Bertoli? It happened in PA near where he lives...

Police: Truck In Fatal Accident Missing Speedometer - Local News Story - WCAU | Philadelphia

State police said the truck responsible for a freak and fatal accident on Interstate 95 Thursday should not have been on the road at all.

Police uncovered several safety violations while inspecting the truck, including a broken lug nut, which is believed to be the cause of the accident.

"I deeply regret what happened to the family," truck driver Willie Benjamin said Friday.

The truck was traveling southbound on I-95 near the Walt Whitman Bridge when two tires on the rear driver side of the trailer flew off, police said.

The tires landed into the northbound lanes and sheared the top off a minivan, killing the driver, Maurizio Bertoli.

His wife survived with minor injuries.

Police said the trailer's inspection sticker expired in April and the truck should not have been on the road.

"The mere fact the vehicle doesn’t have a speedometer, that in itself is a violation that truck should not have gone out on the road in that condition at that time," said Lt. Anthony Sivo of the Pennsylvania State Police.

The missing and broken items may have been caught in pre-road inspection, police said.

The company that owns the trailer, Johnson and Dennis, which hauls items out of Broomall, Pa., said the trailer was inspected within the last week, but Pennsylvania does not require the sticker be shown.

The company that owns the truck cab, J and B Flooring, in Laurel, Md., said the speedometer was out of the truck for repairs.

No charges have been filed but police are still investigating.
