sherco, I suggest you find the funds to get to a class, I have been in the stone biz for 25 + years
I have many books and tapes and DVDs, and when I took the class I realized how little I knew about
stone, the techniques you will learn are the key, you will not learn unless you have hands on and someone is standing there telling you what you are doing wrong, no book can do that for you,
do it, you will not be disappointed

Sherco,
Books just don't do it justice. The class will teach you tecniques and processes that you learn from apprenticing from an expert.Better yet, you receive all the tools with the class.
Spend years learning by trial and error or learn the proper way and build a solid foundation. That way you are light years ahead of your competition.
Some of the things I learned at the workshop- nobody knows in my area.

However, to get you started on some geology here's a great website for reference.

Oh maaan...ok I'll give Fred the credit for helping me find Jo's class. The dvds Jo is referring to are very general information and most of the content is a few years old.
I would suggest watching Huligar's videos here on the website just to give you an idea of what can be done.

Sherco ,
You can definitely learn a lot just from this forum. Ask any questions you may have, search for subjects your interested in and post photos of work and/ or practice ( that is half the battle). There's a lot of info in the archives and many restoration pros that can give great advice. I spent a few months on here just reading past threads.

Welcome to the NSRA.

Re: October 24-25/08 stone polishing class

Sherco, just a reply to your thread i'am heading over for the course and can't wait, i have to close my bussiness down for a week or two but when you add the pros and cons the pros outweigh any con. We have done a lot of r&d over here and can get it to 90% right but the last 10% fails us. I am very happy to post you how i went, i get back in early november. Cheers shawn.
