"Kitchen Face-lift that's good for the Environment" - CNW Telbec (Communiqués de presse)

"Kitchen Face-lift that's good for the Environment"

HAMILTON, ON, Jan. 16 /CNW/ - In an effort to reduce and reuse, a unique
contest is being introduced to encourage people to think twice before throwing
out their old kitchen cabinets and countertops into our already overflowing
landfills. The contest introduces a solution that won't break their budget and
is also good for the environment. Hamilton based Countertop Makeovers is the
company behind what it calls "The Kitchen Face-lift Contest." Though not a
total kitchen makeover per say, Countertop Makeovers offers a great way to
spruce up any kitchen using a safe and eco-friendly alternative. "Usually when
most people want to make any major changes to their kitchen, they
automatically assume they would need to hire a contractor to come in and rip
out their kitchen cabinets or their countertops creating a very time consuming
and costly mess." Said Jennifer O'Keefe, one of the Directors and part owner
of Countertop Makeovers, "However, by simply using a special water-based
solution that adheres to an existing countertop or cabinet, we can make any
kitchen look almost brand new by simply resurfacing those old cabinets and
countertops."
The "Kitchen Face-lift Contest" takes place from January 18th to February
15, 2008, and though they've only been in business for one year, Countertop
Makeovers has already resurfaced the countertops of 150 homes and hopes to
more than double that number to 350 by the end of this year. They've helped to
reduce the amount of garbage piling up in landfills. "The water-based solution
we use is environmentally friendly and is great for people who are especially
sensitive or who have allergies." Said O'Keefe, "And the best part is, our
customers can choose from over 68 decorator colours giving them the look they
want at a price that is affordable. That's why we hope this contest will get
people interested in seeking new ways to change the current look of their
kitchen while helping to save the environment. For us it's all about recycling
by resurfacing."
Backed by a five-year warranty, Countertop Makeovers is the only company
in South Western Ontario that offers countertop resurfacing and can refinish
such materials as laminate, Formica, veneers, ceramic tile, wood and Arborite.
A customer can save up to 75% of the cost of replacement. "As an added bonus,"
said O'Keefe, "Our professional technicians will repair any minor damage to a
countertop prior to resurfacing including scratches, cut marks, burns, chips,
dents and minor water damage. And the best part is the countertop is ready to
use within hours. Using industry-leading technology, we can quickly and
expertly apply a fresh factory new look to wood, veneers, melamine and metal
cabinets. This smooth, durable semi-gloss finish looks beautiful and is very
easy to clean."

I call B.S. - these products never stick to the old surfaces good enough and very soon after application you have a nasty looking kitchen.

Re: Kitchen Face-lift that's good for the Environment

The new paint scratches off easily leaving you able to see the old material under it. Just plain nasty.

I have seen applications though, where new tile was applied over old laminate tops - the mastic type of adhesives are getting a very good hold over old laminate as long as the old surface is prepaired correctly and the old laminate is adhered well to the substraight. Of course these guys are talking about re-coloring and not tiling over.

The companies who recoat the porcelian (sp?) tubs will not re-color kitchen sinks because they know their epoxy paints will not stand up to pots and pans in the kitchen.
