Hi Jo, this is my first of hopefully many posts to your site. So far I really like what I see; keep up the good work and thanks for the invite.
You wanted to know the “Real Deal on the Cimex, well here it is.
I have two of them; they are about as indestructible as any machine could be. There are two models, a 400 rpm, 1.5 hp unit & an 880 rpm 2 hp unit. The 400 will work on stone, I personally have used them but it is not considered a real stone machine and if that is going to be the main use of the machine I don’t recommend it for that. The 880 rpm unit, R48 DF I think it is, is more of a work horse than you can imagine.
When ever I estimate a job my rule of thumb on production is at about 500 sq ft, per grit, per hr with that machine. Actually on most stone I get higher than that, on terrazzo I have gotten as much as 1,400 sq ft per hour (but that was only a test and I was really pushing it) and on concrete over 1,000 ft per hour. On most “reasonable (what ever that is) lippage, you’re looking at about 100 sq ft per hour to flat.
You mentioned less operator fatigue. On a job about three and half years ago I had someone come by that was 49 yrs old and had been doing stone restoration for 30 yrs. We marked out about 240 sq ft and I asked him how long it would take him to cover that area. He said he could do it with his weighted swing machine in about an hour. (Some people think that’s a little on the high side but that’s what he said so we’re going with it) He went over it in twenty minutes; yes he was done in 20 min. I kept going on & on about how fast it was and his reply was that was not what had impressed him. He said that, “At 49 yrs old he couldn’t believe that there was almost no operator fatigue and that with his swing machine he can barely walk at the end of a day. Another restoration company that I know of has been using swing machines for about 5 yrs now. When it comes to stone work there was really only one guy in the company that felt comfortable with doing any diamond work because of how technical it is. After about three years of prodding him and telling him how much I love mine he finely broke down and bought one. After his first job with his new Cimex his words to me were that if he were on the job to supervise he’d have no problems letting a 19 yr old kid do the diamond work. His brother jokingly said that they wanted to install a DVD player on the tank so it would give them something to do while they’re working on the floor now.
The R48 DF runs at 880 rpms, with a 2 hp motor and is 110v or 220v. I have personally run over 300 lbs of head weight on mine but normally run aprx 80 – 170 lbs plus the aprx 70 lbs of actual head weight for a total of as much as 240 lbs.
A site you might want to check out for more info is
http://www.excellent-supply.com/products.asp?cat=16 No I do not sell them or profit from the sale in anyway. Yes, my brother Rick Gelinas is the owner of the site and if you have ever worked with family you know why he has his company and I have mine – it just works better that way. There is also a forum connected to that site but for the most part most of the participants are carpet cleaners but there is a little bit about stone work there.
If you’re considering getting a machine for stone work, do yourself a favor and take a long look at a Cimex. If you want to come down to FL I’d be glad to let you run one of mine if you would like. If you have any more questions at all feel free to ask them here or Email me and I’ll gladly do what I can to help you out,
