AVALON LANDSCAPING TECHNOLOGIES INC. is a full-service design, construction and garden maintenance firm, based in Richmond Hill and Holland Landing, Ontario.
Founder Steve Chanady started Avalon Landscaping in 1965 in Toronto. At that time AVALON was one of the only names under "A" in the Yellow Pages Landscape heading. Steves training as a Horticultural specialist allowed him to gain a share of the available market place, by providing the consumer with top quality products and services, at a competitive rate. Avalon's specialty at that time was planting and gardening services. The demand for Avalon's reliable services grew, and Steve expanded Avalon to take on all aspects of not only the soft landscaping but also the hard landscaping that was demanded and very much in need by the growing clientele.
The Landscape Industry continued to grow, and felt a need for a Horticultural Association that would represent all professionals in the field in a practical, educational and political environment. Steve Chanady, along with a group of other professionals, started to meet on industry issues on a regular basis. All who attended the meetings were in favour of Provincial Association that they could all be part of. That association is LANDSCAPE ONTARIO, which was founded in 1973. Landscape Ontario joined landscape contractors, garden maintenance contractors, nurserymen, and other related sectors together to provide services that would enhance professionalism and business potential.
Landscape Ontario now has a total of approximately 2000 members, and is the voice of the Ontario Horticultural industry. The two publications created by the association, namely Landscape Trades and Horticulture Review, keep members informed and up-to-date on the ongoing issues facing the industry. Landscape Ontario's Congress Trade Show in Toronto is one of the largest horticultural show in North America. Then comes the Canada Blooms and other Trade shows, which keeps members and nonmembers on top of the many cutting edge products and services offered throughout the global market. Diverse educational programs, government lobbying and negotiations with Workmen's Compensation, (now called WSIB), are just a few of the services provided that benefit the industry and consumers on a long-term basis.
Steve's son EDWARD CHANADY, a graduate of the Humber College Landscape Technology program, has been President and sole owner of Avalon since 1989, with Steve Chanady, still in the company acting as a Supervisor and Project Manager in the Garden Maintenance division. Edward's wife, Anita, has been controller for Avalon since 1989. She has a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree, specialized in Accounting and Business Management.
Avalon's quality of workmanship has been recognized by award achievements, television shows (HGTV), Canada Blooms, magazines and other publications. Edward has also sat as Chairman of the Contractors Commodity Group in Landscape Ontario. One of the achievements of the Contractors group was the "Home Owner's Guide" to Selecting a Landscape Contractor.
Avalon now provides a wide range of products and services to the public. Avalon manufactures stone art, furniture, and lighting. Avalon created a sister company (Sundials Of Distinction) in 1989, that manufactures garden ornaments such as; bronze sundials, plaques and a variety of cast concrete products and other custom castings. Sundials of Distinction, was the first manufacturer of bronze sundials in Ontario, and still one of only a few in Canada.
Avalon's major clientele is located in the Greater Toronto Area including York Region.
