Question Stretching Granite

I have a 124 in. long , 5 1/2 in. tall, 3 cm thick Black Forest back splash that the installer cut 5/8 of an in. short. This section meets the left and right back splashes at 90 deg. angles. I had the installer stop at that point as it was the last peice to be installed and I needed to think about my options. This peice was cut as a full length section from the slab at the fabrication shop and was 127 in. long. There is not enough material to fabricate another full length one. Due to the lay out of the kitchen, the counter top has a seam at the sink. The full length backsplash makes the seam much less noticeable and I would prefer not to have a seam somewhere in the middle.
The installer wanted to fill in the area with a 5/8 in. peice and secure it with caulk. The wall behind the back splash is stainless steel and there are halogen lights under the upper cabinets. The area is bright with the lights on.
I could live with a repair if it was nearly invisable. The back splash is not secured in place and can be removed. The installer since threw out the cut off ends of the other back splash sections so a repair section would have to be made from a remnant peice.
What is the best way to repair this ?

wow, I think a re-placement is needed. I do understand and respect the fact that you would like to work with installers, but this looks like crap. the amount of money that you would spend to get that fill and to make it look like stone would cost you more than the top.

Re: Stretching Granite

I agree. It is unfortunate that this happened but ther is no other choice than make a new one unless you did away with the backsplash all together.

Re: Stretching Granite

The Fab shop asked if I wanted it repaired or replaced. I am leaning toward replacement but don't know if due to color variations and patterns if overall it would be seem out of place. There is only one supplier of this particular granite in Denver. I am going there tomorrow to check availablity and bringing a 30 in x 20 in. peice for comparrison. Thanks for your advise Huligar and Topshop. I'll keep you posted.
