Staining on Granites

We used GranQuarts sealer on some of the granites we installed and now customers are calling us about staining!!! The granites range from Golden Vyara to Black Absolute!
Our customers are telling us that milk cartons, canned foods, even beer bottles are leaving
a stain. We tried paper towel and mild soap (let dry) to absorb the stains, poultice, steel wool and pamirand resealing. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas as to what will work.
PS We've gone back to Miracle 511 sealer

Re: Staining on Granites

It sounds like you had too much sealer on the stone. Try to use more of the same sealer, and this time wipe the area completely dry after sealing.

Re: Staining on Granites

Is the Granquartz sealer a solvent based? Use stonetech bulletproof - it is water based. I have never had any complaints.

Re: Staining on Granites

GranQuartz saleman got us to try their product. We are now back to using Miracle 511 sealer. Never had these problems before! But will try what you suggested.

Re: Staining on Granites

sounds like what Huligar said. the sealer residue is etching. 511 wont work any better. its not really necessary to seal black absolute anyway, i wouldnt be surprised if thats the one theyre having the most trouble with.

Re: Staining on Granites

We buff the surface with a dry soft cloth to soak up any extra sealer that remains on the granite. Should this not prevent to much sealer?

Re: Staining on Granites

I use a wool bonnet on a hand grinder. Slow at first to work it in and faster to buff extra off. It generates some heat which speeds cure time too. I think your problem is the customers may be using the tops too soon after application of a solvent based sealer. Like I said, No problems with bulletproofer.

If you have AB granite with areas that have lighten up it color; it was probably a dyed stone in which acidic liquids have moved or removed the dye. This has to be explained to the customer that it was not your sealer but a choice made by the manufacturer to give the stone a more intense black look. The remedy is to remove it all to expose the true beauty of the natural stone that it is.

Also, do tests with your sealer before you apply in customers home. Now that you have call backs is a time to stop what your doing and answer the cause of the problems.

Re: Staining on Granites

Dave

I made assessments of AB granite at stoneadvice.com about the dye was hurting our natural stone industry; they removed the thread to the darkroom. I said that dying that stone was probably single worst complaint i get and it may cause some that bought it to tell others about their problems, and those that may have been thinking of any stone might choose fake stone over a natural stone. I told them they should remove the dye before they install it or they are going to help hurt our industry. The brotherhood is very protective and I wish I could help without prejustice.
