Q: We have a granite countertop that is turning white around the soap dispenser. How can this stain be removed and prevented from coming back?
A: It's always best to ask the supplier or installer for stain removal advice.
If that's not possible, you can try removing the stain with rubbing alcohol. Saturate several sheets of white paper towels with alcohol and place them on the stain. Cover with plastic wrap to prevent drying and leave overnight. Then remove, let dry, wash and wipe dry.
If that doesn't work, try a grease-stain removal procedure. It could be that fat in the soap has penetrated your granite. Make a
poultice (soft, moist mass) by combining flour and a grease solvent, such as Dawn dish detergent. Apply the
poultice to the stain and cover the area with plastic wrap. Let it set overnight. Wipe it away and then wash the area. Rinse and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
