Practice makes Perfect....hopefully!

Im trying to practice as much as i can in my garage but im having some trouble with some things. I have a piece of uba tuba and i just wanted to take it all the way down with the diamonds and work up to a polished finished. I cant seam to get it to pop. Its getting a little shine but not even close to finished. I started with 150-300-500-1000-2000-3000 but i have to be doing something wrong. Joe, when i was over i was getting the hang of it...its like i lost it. Should I spend more time on a certain pad? Im running the machine on the lowest rpm and putting alot of presure but i cant get that dam polished shine. Another question i had, if you have a light scratch on granite, there is no need to start the diamonds so low right. Its possible that you can start with 1000-2000-3000-buff and be done right? In what situation would you have to start as low as 150 and do most of you use the diamonds all the time on jobs? If any of you have some advice on the best way to practice, let me know so i can try it. Thanks

Hey Anthony. I'm right there with ya practicing away. I've found spending more time at 1000 and 2000 will get a deeper polish even though it seems like forever. Working w\ Black Absolute I 'll get through 150, 300 and just count on spending a bit more time at 500 to make sure I' don't get any gray hazes. 1k, 2k ,3k more passes at each step.
I have a gloss meter and that seems to help figuring out where I'm at.
The granite scratch- From what I've learned here you're honing will start below 500 (150)depending on the depth and you might have to back down a step if your demo doesn't eliminate the scratch. That's why you want to keep your working area small. Nothing like having to polish the whole piece for a 1\2 inch scratch.

Anthony, one of the first things we drill into you at the class is how to determine what grit to start off with. The starter grit will always be determine by the damage to the stone, type of stone, and desire finish. In most cases you can start off with a 500 grit.

As for the uba tuba, we will need to see some images are video of your test area.
