Overhang on Island

I'm putting an island that will be 5 feet wide by 3.5 feet. The overhang is going to be 18 inches since I don't feel 12 will give sufficient leg room.

Should I install posts at the corners of the island or will corbits (sp?) under it at the back of the cabinets be enough to support it?

Re: Overhang on Island

Hi Dave

Could you tell us what stone you're using, and what thickness? You'll probably need the corbels as a minimum. It's possible that you can have some custom angle irons made, and designed into the island itself.

Re: Overhang on Island

Dave,

The maximum recommended overhang by the Marble Institute of America is 10" without a support bracket. On 18" no matter what stone, I would use corner posts and skirting boards much like a wood kitchen table between the legs and back to the cabinets. Tennon the skirting into the legs and opoxy to the stone at the top. I have even pegged the legs at the floor so noone can kick it out by accident.

You would be surprised how much weight people try to put on an overhang when sitting at the counter - the last thing you need is someone breaking off your overhang and it landing on their toes. Plus it dresses it up.

Re: Overhang on Island

Hi everyone, I am no fabricator by any means but I have seen where they will place a 1/4" or maybe a 1/2”steel sheet that is cut out to fit under the slab. I guess it must provide enough support for the 24” or so over hang with out using corbels or anything like that. Good luck.

Cheers,

Austin Willis
