lime juice on my counter top

Ok guys, this is a question from a other site. The homeowner did send me the images to post. I will have them stop in to give you all the information that is needed for us to help them.

Hi, I left a bowl of lime juice on my counter top which I thought was granite, but I'm having serious doubts about that now! Some of the lime juice must have spilled down the side of the bowl which sat for about an hour. Now I have a white ring there. Does anyone know how I can remove this?
When I first moved in, I had similar white spots here and there and learned the builder had not sealed the "granite". I hired someone to come out and seal the countertop and he also removed the spots. He used something that cost about $195 a quart. I think the brand name began with an "A". First thing he said to me though, was that he had never seen "granite" like this and was convinced that it wasn't granite. Once sealed, I mistakenly believed I didn't have to be worried about anything staining it again. I would like to try and remove the stain myself (to avoid paying him again...his first visit was $300!!!

Re: lime juice on my counter top

The stone in question looks like a granite to me but pictures can fool us easily. This is most likely not a stain but a chemical etch caused by the acidity of the juice. You will most likely not be able to remove it yourself. This looks like it will need to be polished to make it go away.

Re: lime juice on my counter top

When you say polished, do you mean with tools? Like a buffer or something similiar? When the guy came to seal the tops 3 months ago, he used something chemical (liquid) and paper towels...lots of paper towels to do the job. The etches were gone. I didn't get to see what he used first to remove the etch marks, but his last product was a stone enhancer that made the countertop look darker and shinier. I thought he only used 2 products: the sealer and the enhancer. The sealer wouldn't remove etches would it? His product was $195 a quart...really expensive...I looked up the brand name online, but I have since tossed the name because I thought once sealed it wouldn't stain/etch anymore. I thought the name began with a "A" but I can't be sure. I do know Home Depot doesn't carry it!! Any ideas?

Re: lime juice on my counter top

The area that he had removed etchings previously was near the sink ~ I am not sure what caused the first etchings...but they were droplets any where from very small to about the size of a nickel. It is entirely possible that as I was reaming a lemon, juice squirted and dripped. I also dropped a sausage on the counter and possilby the grease from that caused it. A maintenance person also washed brushes in the sink (paint and spackle) that day. I did not notice it right away, so I can't pinpoint what caused it. But, except for the size and shape, it looked like the ring etch from the lime juice...whitish in color. Does that help at all?

That area looks like it needs to be re-polish.
It would cost you more then $300 in tools if you want to do it yourself.
You may be better off spending the $300. I am going to look and see if I can find the name and type of stone that you have. Give me a few hours to get back to you.

Re: lime juice on my counter top

I did find out that he was using Aqua-mix products. At least the Enrich and Seal (which was the $195 product I referred to earlier. Only I thought it was $195 per quart not gallon.
