Learning about stone

I recently installed a new Travertine floor and my installer suggested me to buff it for additional luster. I agreed to do it and after the job was done I notice that the floor in some areas looks like it's etched. He told me nothing is wrong with the floor and that it is how is supposed to look. Please can some body tell me if buffing the floor can do some harm to it if is not done right. I am very unhappy because from the distance, it looks like it has to much porous.

Re: Learning about stone

Many honed travertine stones are filled with portland to fill the cavernous voids of the stone and will not blend above a hone finish.

This is a common complaint when the stone finish has surpassed the stones fills ability to go above the hone state.

You may be seeing more contrast now that the stone has started to take a sheen and the fill has not.

Pictures will help us to help you with your floor.

There is always a solution!

Re: Learning about stone

if pictures are not readily available, if you know the process that he used, it would help. how did he buff the area (floor machine, car polisher,...)? did he use a steel wool pad, 3m pad, diamond pads? any chemicals? and was it done wet or dry?
