Jeff, we don't do key seams. 98% of our material is veined. Key seams look awful, IMHO, in veined materials. All our seams are either parallel grain cut or bookmatched. All CNC, no chippage.
If something is awry in the field, we do it pretty much as you described.

Huligar,

They came over yesterday and refilled the seam w/ epoxy, which filled it in some. But the glasslike surface off the AB is still broken by the seam. I asked them about polishing it, and they said there's no such thing....pretty much shooting it down soon as I mentioned it. He said "you can't polish epoxy". The said the seam is within 1/32 and is perfectly flat.

They're pretty much washing there hands at this point.

If you'd be interested in polishing this for me, please email @ johngirgenti@comcast.net or give me your contact info. I'd be interested in getting this done as soon as possible.

thanks,
John

The shop may not know how to do it and it is one of the more difficult stones to work with. That being said, the seam is within or actually better than what state tolerances usually allow and it is quite flat. The company is not trying to do you a diservice, they are just not knowledgable about the procedure or the confidence to attempt it.

If anyone can make it look better, I would have Jo on my side in a New York minute.

Just to keep you all up to date, I spoke to the fabricator today, and he has informed that his customers’ satisfaction and his reputation come first. The top will be replace with a new seamless top. I think this is very good pr.

Glad this all worked out, BUT you know where I stand on calling out the contractor. Next time the contractors name and information should be sent via PM.

But thats just me.

The fabricator is not replacing it for free though. He is just offering to do the labor for free. In order to recieve a new free top, I have to pay $1800 for it in AB, or $1200 in another color. And I won't be able to get it in the same thickness as this island, it will be in 1.25" slab.

Jo,

Here are the pictures you asked me to take. I rubbed the island w/ the paint laquer thinnner and didn't notice any black on the cloth. You can see the blotchiness straight down the middle of the first pic

Here's good pic the it in one of the corners of the island

And you can sort of it see in this pic which is a different corner.
