Hazy countertop seam

Hello,

Not being the home owner who made the purchase, I have what I believe is an engineered stone countertop. I was hoping you could offer some assistance regardless. It wasn't until undercabinet lighting was installed that the seams became really noticeable. Per the advice of a friend, I tried using nail polish remover, but that had no effect. I assume I need to buff or polish the seams? The countertop pieces don't align perfectly flat near the front which makes it appear as if there is a gap. That fix is probably much more involved. I would be happy to be able to bring the high gloss back to the seam area. Your advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Hazy countertop seam

To me it does not look like an enginered stone but maybe a natural stone that might be pre-fabricated.
Most engineered stone installers are trained to not try to polish the top of the material. Being a natural stone it can be top polished. Most likely the installer had a slight lippage at the seam and ground and attempted to polish it back. They probably waxed the area instead of bringing the stone to a true polish. The wax has worn off. Re-polishing is a task for a trained professional using diamond pads - the seam can be filled and color matched to make it much less visable.

Topshop, Thanks for your reply. I live in the SF Bay Area, specifically in the East Bay. Could you possibly give me an estimate of the repair? There are 2 seams, the other is under the dish drainer. Thanks again.

srinda:

While I appreciate your do-it-yourself attitude, this is not a job for a homeowner. Heck, it's not a job for most granite installers. You need to make a decision to either pay to have someone who knows what they are doing fix it, or live with it the way it is.

Even if you purchased the hundreds of dollars worth of tools and abrasives required for this repair and practiced on scrap in your garage, it would still not be as cost-effective as hiring a pro with documented experience.

You don't cut your own hair or fill your own teeth do you?

I expect this isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but I have to tell you the truth.
