| Re: Hairline Crack in Granite--Old Installation We very seldom see cabinets swelling to the point of breaking the stone. Usually the partical board cabinet sides swell in an outward direction - unless they are on frameless cabinets like you get from IKEA. Usually granite is not installed on such poor quality cabinets, but you never know.
One time Jo was called to an evaluation/repair which a class rode along on and the cabinets actually shrunk causing a crack at the sink hole. In this case the home owner had a "friend" make his cabinets from wet pine - not kiln dried. As the wood dried it shrank and the only thing supporting the stone was the plywood panels inside of the cabinets. A big tip-off to this was the cracked center panels of the cabinet doors and the gap under the stone where the cabinet face frame should have been tight. This of course voided any implecation of warranty.
