granite vanities

I have been restoring marble vanities in hotels for 7 years with great success but have battled to find a truly acceptable process on granite with portable hand machines.
I would be grateful if anyone can suggest a methodology.
With marble and travertine, I use various grinding and honing stages, polishing compound and sealer with 175 rpm tooling.
I have tried a range of granite grind and hone sets but perhaps are not using a fast enough machine and or time per stage to get an acceptable finish?

Re: granite vanities

This is more a subject for the trades area. But here goes. You are actually most likely using too fast of a machine. There are few machines out there which have the power required at the low rpms and will not burn up doing it. Top polishing granite is almost an art. No one process works for all granites and no one process works for everybody. It is about reading the stone as you go but not over doing each grit so you leave the stone flat. It takes a lot of practice and some hands on coaching helps.

Re: granite vanities

Dong Sin makes a good granite polishing diamond for countertops and flat areas. They are 3 inch rinch and very rigid. We use them all the time on granite. I even use them on marble vanities somestimes that are acid sensitive. Dong Sin is represented in teh United States by Consolidated Diamond.

You can apply more pressure to a smaller diamond and actually do more work per minute than a four or five inch diamond. My guys will refinish and polish a 12 square foot vanity in around 45-75 minutes including polishing and masking depending on hardness and color.
