Question Granite Sink Stain

Gang - have a quick question. Have a black granite sink. Made the mistake of cleaning my home water filtering unit in the sink.. Put bleach in the sink to disinfect canisters - used quite a bit of water with it - but left it in there for a while. The black is bleached out some. Is there some way to restore the color over time - sure that shoe polish is outta the question- just kidding. Really dumb move but hope there is something I can rub into it over time to try and restore some of the color and luster... Your thoughts.. Neil drinm@verizon.com

Hi Neil, IS it possible for you to take a picture of the sink and post here ? I would say yes the members can help you , it always better if we can have a look @ the problem first.

Re: Granite Sink Stain

As Hobo said we will need a pic.

Is the sink realy granite or one of those Silgranite/Pegasus composite things. If it is realy granite which stone is it?

Re: Granite Sink Stain

You have removed the dye from the stone. That is your stone before it was artificially colored. A color enhancing sealer may darken that stone, but you will need to reapply often.

Re: Granite Sink Stain

I agree with David but the sink is not real stone - it is a composit of ground up stone fragments molded as a filler with plastic resin - you have bleached the color out of the plastic binder. I don't think there is anything you can do to fix this unless there is a chemical engineer out there who knows how to get color into plastic. Sad truth is that if you weren't scammed into believing that is stone you could have bought a perfectly good stainless sink. Do not believe everything you read on a box when picking out a new sink.

Re: Granite Sink Stain

Based on your picture, your sink is a "Swanstone 9" Deep Double-Bowl Granite Undermount Kitchen Sink - Nero" or one of its closely competing products. If it is this model you should call the manufacturer right away because "Swanstone offers an outstanding limited lifetime warranty on residential applications, and a limited 10 year warranty on commercial applications. For added convenience, choose from a variety of unique finishes to suit your kitchen." This is a quote form a web site that promotes the product. Here is the link: Westside Wholesale, Inc. - Swanstone 9" Deep Double-Bowl Granite Undermount Kitchen Sink - Nero.

It appears that the surface has been stripped of its protective coaitng or patina. This happens with porcelain and some other man made surfaces. There are kitchen and bath restoration companies that specialize it reapplying a durable, high quality, translucent color matched coating to the surface. I've seen this type of damage repaired in this manner. Good Luck.

Re: Granite Sink Stain

Yea, I never knew that junk could be re-colored and re-coated.
