Granite refinishing recommendations (Boston)?

I've just had a Black Galaxy kitchen countertop installed, and the seam that was placed (centered on the sink cutout) is a lot more noticeable than I had expected. To be honest, it bugs me a lot, particularly because I am not entirely sure that the seam was necessary (but I could be wrong). Might it be possible to have the seam polished down, and if so, could anyone recommend someone local to do it? I've contacted my installer to ask whether he has the ability, but I'd like to get some referrals in case he doesn't. For what it's worth, the seam is even on both the top and side and not more than 1/16" wide. Since it lies across the cutout, the total length is not more than 10".

Thanks! Any advice would be much appreciated.

you can try and make contact with the trans; I know for a fact that h-tran can polish seams in black granite. However i do not know if they have the time to fix other peoples work. http://www.nsraweb.com/575-n_tran/

Yup - The Trans are great guys and can polish that - if they have time.

Re: Granite refinishing recommendations (Boston)?

Thanks! I appreciate the advice. I am not in any particular hurry, so I will contact the Trans and ask if perhaps they could squeeze this in sometime.

To be fair to my installer, he's been quite professional throughout the project, and I don't feel that he's trying to deceive me or get away with half-hearted work. We discussed the situation earlier today, and although I don't quite agree with him, his reasons are sufficiently plausible that I can see his point. I'll have to think it over a bit more.

On that note, can anyone offer (or point to) general information on the factors that are considered when deciding on seam placement? The internet cites in very general terms issues like layout, support needed, and (obviously) slab size, but does anyone know where I can find more detailed information like the effect on fabrication or seam placement of issues like density, tensile strength, color, pattern size?

Thanks again!

Re: Granite refinishing recommendations (Boston)?

The factors that determine seam placement are wide - slab size, kitchen layout, the contractors ability to handle the pieces. There is not hard and fast rule to this and it is usually up to the contractors to decide but smart contractors discuss it with their clients before hand. I usually talk to the customer about seam placement before I even give them an estimate - usually at measure for the estimate or when I get a kitchen layout depending on whether it is a top replacement or full kitchen replacement.
