eonman Intro

I had Black Galaxy granite countertops installed in my kitchen. they are beautiful EXCEPT for the hairline scratches in many places. These scratches are especially visible at night with the lights on. I pointed it out to the owner of the company and he said they were probably caused by the "diamond blade" when it was mined. He said he could buff the counters but said I would see buffing marks that would be much more visible. He offers no other option. Is this normal? If not, do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

I would certainly talk to your man again. The counters should be scratch free. Someone did not do their job correctly.

Re: eonman Intro

Hi eonman, the scratches are common in stone, they are most visable in the dark colors. They usually are from 2 things
if they are circular they are from the polishing process at the factory
if they are somewhat straight they are from poor handling
your fabricator probably didn't cause them but he needs to learn how to fix this problem before he sells the material.
I would suggest he take the next NSRA class and he will be able to easily fix this for you, if you. haven't made final payment, I would insist it is fixed to your satisfaction or it is replaced. the class would cost him less than replacing your tops and you won't have to deal with the inconvenience

I hope you did not pay that guy all of the money.
Contact your local NSRA member and have them fix the top and than back charge the fab guys for the work that had to be done.

They need to fix it or replace it. Scratches on a new top are unacceptable.

Re: eonman Intro

Thanks to all for the input. I'm meeting with my contractor tomorrow and will offer these suggestions to him. I'm afraid he will try to talk me into accepting them "as is" with scare tactics about ruining my sink and cabinets if they are replaced. Wish me luck!

Re: eonman Intro

Eonman,

If you want your kitchen to be done the right way you need to stand up to your contractor and let him know what YOU want. He needs to make it right. This isnt personal this is BUSINESS!!! And alot of money is at stake and your happiness as well with the project being done to YOUR satisfaction. Dont allow him for one minute to intimidate you. STAND UP TO HIM. I wish you luck and much happiness with your new kitchen. Btw Im in the middle of remodeling my bathroom. A simple 9x5 bath...Simple yeah right...So many little details and things that can go wrong. But you need to breath thru it and get it done. Tomorrow is a new day....Take care, Holly in NJ

Re: eonman Intro

I agree, do not let him make his problem your problem. if he ruins your sink or cabinets or anything in, near, or around your home, guess what, it's his responsibility and not your problem he needs to make this right

I have seen these problems with scratches, whether from the factory or transport. Contractor is responsible. This is a problem he needs to get fixed.
