Dull Ogee edge on Mesa Gold, Pictures

The ogee edge is dull and hazy white in places. The granite is called Mesa Gold and they say it will not take a polish like the surface. So now I have a dull hazy ogee edge that is not vibrant like the resined top surface. They are willing to correct the situation but I would like to offer them some pointers cause obviously they do not know how to get a good polished edge. Some of the edging around the island have visual pad marks, it looks like a plastic stick mark was made, but its obvious that they are pad marks. Not sure if the stone is burned or not? Is there a way to tell. How can I get this edging to look like the top surface. Has anyone heard of "Donnification" Here are some pictures of the edge. Thanks

tons of pictures here, just scroll through. Thanks

The original post has been edited to add the link.

Searching through Stoneadvice for restoring a slightly faded edge to get a richer edge to match the top surface revealed donnification. Is it an option. First I think the edge has to be polished better because it looks like someone ran a bar of soap down the side of the edge.

Hi Othertime,
First off, congrats on a great choice of granite. Mesa gold is beyootiful! I actually found your photo album while searching.
I agree w\you that the edge needs to be repolished. Donnification is primarily used for color matching or darkening of an exposed resined surface . It will not take the place of a properly polished edge. You would still see dull\hazy patches and scratches.

remember slabs that have a significant amount of resin on them will always be deeper and more shiny than the edges, its impossible to reproduce the resin process that the factories use.

Re: Dull Ogee edge on Mesa Gold, Pictures

so is there a process that will work for polishing the granite in place (in my house)? Does this include wet sanding or dry sanding work. Start with what grit and work to what grit pad? 400 to 3000 finish? I need to explain to them because they are under the impression that this is an exceptable edge for this stone. I do not agree with them at all. Thanks

LOL, that is a great edge if they are hacks.
First they need to get rid of the lines from the router, they will have to start no higher than a 100 grit on a flexible backer and run the grits all the way to the buff pad.
If I was you I would start looking for a stone restoration guy to do this work. doing this type of work after it has been install takes special skills.

It sounds to me that the fabricator is blowing smoke up your arse to cover his poor work. Make them fix it even if they have to remove the tops. There is no excuse for poor quality work like this. Resin only fills the voids between the particles of the stone - yes it may cause a color change but poor polish is poor polish - there is no chemical replacement for a good mechanical polish on granite. Make the fabricator stand up and do the right thing - which is either pay someone to fix it right or tear out the job and re-do it.

Re: Dull Ogee edge on Mesa Gold, Pictures

They plan on coming out on Tuesday to see what they can do with the edge. I am putting no faith in them to get the job done right though.

Does anyone have a restoration servies that they can recomend that is in the VA,DC,MD area (northern VA specifically).

From the responses I have gotten here and other places, it is clear that they did a terrible polishing job.

I am going to take a sample to another fabricator just to see what kind of polish they can put on the stone so I can show the current fabricators that a high polish can be attained.

Any more comments are appreciated. Thanks for those you have!
