Re: Dull Ogee edge on Mesa Gold, Pictures

I agree with past posters.

It is hard for Fabricators to match the Polish on material that have a high resin finish. The only thing I do is Apply an ager (Deep Enhancer only to the age before polishing.)

ON A POLISHED SURFACE I would Kill the sealer on ONLY the egee by applying Acetone (RAG it acouple of times) Then applying the ager then sealing it.

But as the other gentelman said it will never be a perfect match.

As for the Polish it should be worked on.

2 ways - Dry pads - Dust and mess - Wet ( MESS)

to avoid Damage to you cab Removal may be the right move. Depends on the Kitchen.

Locally we have tons of problems with companies loading up Bad Polished edges with tons of Wax and buffing them just for a temp. fix so they can colect and leave.

Wax will not chage the polish on you top. Just temporary mask the marks.

Good Luck

Re: Dull Ogee edge on Mesa Gold, Pictures

to simplify it the best i can:

no matter how much resin or no resin, a proper fab/install will always have shiny, reflective edge details. with the resin issue, the COLOR may be lighter, but the POLISH should be the same. there is no substitute for a proper mechanical polish, end of story.

I'd like to add a couple of thoughts. If I am wrong, please advise. I am not a fabricator and quite frankly am hard to please and rarely impressed. Any time I see a router line or mark on the surface of a stone, I think AMATEUR. If they left that, they cannot have the tools or the skills to properly polish your edges. Do yourself a favor and cut your losses and move on to a qualified professional. Second thought, dry grinding granite usually = Silica Dust, you might want to look into this for the health of your family if not yourself.

Re: Dull Ogee edge on Mesa Gold, Pictures

When you still see router marks on the stone it is just plain impatience and inexperience. If the edge is polished by cnc and is showing router marks it is poor set-up of tooling on the machinist who is running the cnc.

FYI - Not that every ogee I have polished has come out to my satisfaction but I run position 1 and 2 on the bits and start with 200 grit on the diamond pads with a flexible backer. The reson for this is that the 50 and 100 grit will remove too much material and cause a waviness and distortion in the edge. Ogee is a big pita to polish and that is why it costs so much.

Re: Dull Ogee edge on Mesa Gold, Pictures

Update,

I gave them a second chance to fix this and they did. They took the granite back to the shop and polished them all over again. All the edging now looks like the top surface, shiny with no marks of any kind. They mentioned they were going to put wax on at the end and I told them specifically that wax is for hax and to wet polish through the pads and thats what they did. No substitute for a properly polished edge, it looks beautiful. I will get some pictures up.

They said that a new hire did the polishing job on my kitchen and they fired him after he produced my edging cause of the poor polish. The shitty thing is that they still installed it and tried to pass it off as a proper polish and the best polish the stone would take. Shame shame. But atleast they took the time to do it right, it took them the whole day to repolish the edge.

Anyways, I am above and beyond satisfied with work now. Thank you everyone for the comments and direction for helping me in this situation!!

We are glad this all worked out for you. No one should have to accept second rate work.
