Bad Granite Seam

I got a call yesterday from guy name Ike.
He install a top and the customer does not want to pay him the $3k that is due because of the way the seams look. The granite is blue pearl, so you know it is an easy fix for most of us on the forum. I had to reject this job on the grounds that this forum had a run in this guy a few years back when he did not stand behine his work. http://www.nsraweb.com/consumer-help...am-1084-2.html (Help with granite seam!) is it wrong of me not to want to work with people that can not stand behind his/her word? it is funny how your words from two years ago can come back at you.

Re: Bad Granite Seam

Jo - it seams as if the guy is trying to make it right with the customer this time by calling you. I would do the job but get paid up front and if you cannot make the customer happy about the seam refund the money to the fabricator. Most times if a customer is not happy it is for more than one thing so only guarantee that fix.

You never know they may end up being a regular customer now that they know it is possible to top polish. Or, get the guy up here for a class and teach him.

CA, gray sharpie, and silver metallic sharpie works great to fill a seam on that stone - it also helps if you grind different directions to create crystal flake look. Of course you also need to know how to polish CA. The seam will be so invisable it will make you sick. I did a top in it recently - even I lost the seam when it was done. I kick myself for not having my camera that day.

This stone is very easy to fix, but this guy is acting like he is doing me a favor by making the call. I do not think he is going to pay. I should as him for payment up front, are have give my information to the customer.

Re: Bad Granite Seam

Hey, a new slab of blue pearl will cost him around $1200 bucks plus all the labor to re-make the tops. He can afford to pay vs replacing the tops. Chance is that the fabricator tried to "fix" it his way and made a bigger mess of it.

Whenever I get a call to repair a fab or install mistake the fabricator says a customer has a problem. I ask if the fabricator is paying - the answer is always yes and then I tell them that the problem is theirs not the customers. Funny how that works. Errogance is costly.

Re: Bad Granite Seam

I told them it would cost between $350 to $700. They said that $350 is way too much to repair the countertop. I wish them the best of luck, and told them to have a great day.

Re: Bad Granite Seam

My price is $500 for a bad seam minimum. Then let them eat the job.
