A practical, education-level class designed to expose students to basic tile installation materials, tools and methods.
Instructor will discuss: the common misconceptions regarding ceramic tile and tile installations, the TCA Handbook, ANSI A108 Specifications, minimizing installation problems, working with installation materials, housekeeping, finishing and minor repairs.
Course objective: Students should: have a greater understanding of the installation process, be able to use the TCA Handbook effectively, know how to mix and apply basic installation materials and be able to use and maintain tile installation tools.
Tools required: Will be furnished with basic tools. Students must bring pencils, pens and notebook.
Certification: None given. Students who complete this course are eligible to test and receive a certificate of satisfactory completion
Schedule
Day 1
8:00-9:00 Orientation - The instructor will discuss the students' classroom projects, location of tools and materials, first aid location, safety equipment, CTEF and Tile Council of America policies and other rules of the classroom site and location. The purpose and origin of CTEF and TCA is also covered.

9:00-11:00 Selecting appropriate installation methods - The instructor will discuss how to read and use the TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation and the ANSI 108/118 Standards for installation.

* Understand how the TCA Handbook is used
* Understand how the ANSI Handbook is used
* How the standards became approved methods
11:00-12:00 ANSI 137.1 Manufacturing standards and products
Learning objective:
* Different types of products in the marketplace
* Performance characteristics of different types of tile
* The importance of using understanding ANSI 137.1
12:00-1:00 Lunch break.
1:00-2:00 TCA testing lab tour- Attendee's will tour the TCA lab facilities and production bay.
2:00-2:45 Surface preparation theory and techniques - The instructor will discuss the importance of sound surface preparation practices.
Learning objective:
* Understand the importance of surface preparation.
* Understand the responsibility assigned to various trades in surface preparation
3:00-5:00 Tile Preparation materials, types of thinsets and grouts. A discussion and demonstration of the various materials used in conjunction with preparation and installation of ceramic tile.

* Understand the use of Proprietary materials and methods
Day 2
8:00 - 9:00 Layout theory and techniques - The instructor will discuss and demonstrate layout techniques for the most common residential tile installations.
Learning objective:
* Understand the importance of good layout practices.
* Use basic layout tools.
9:00-9:45 Ceramic tile installation tools and safety - The instructor will discuss safety issues related to the installation of ceramic tile. Operation and safe use of tile installation tools is also covered.
Learning objective:
" Understand the need for a safe workplace environment.
" Safely use basic tile installation tools.
10:00-12:00 Backerboards, Membranes, properties and installation techniques- The instructor will discuss use and installation of various tile backerboards and membrane systems.
Learning objective:
* Understand how to select and install the appropriate tile backerboard.
* Understand the appropriate use and installation techniques for various types of membranes
12:00-1:00 Lunch
1:00-5:00 Ceramic tile installation theory and techniques - The instructor will discuss and demonstrate various thinbed installation methods. The students will use this time to install tiles in the modules.
Learning objective:
* Understand how different installation methods work and achieve varying degrees of performance.
* Understand the basic processes required to complete a ceramic tile installation.
Day 3
8:00-9:30 Deflection of wood and suspended concrete substrates-
The instructor will demonstrate the deflection properties of various types of wood subfloors and attached underlayments. A discussion will also cover suspended concrete floors.

* The deflection of suspended concrete floors
9:30-12:00 Ceramic tile installation theory and techniques - The instructor will discuss and demonstrate various thin-bed installation methods. The students will resume installation in the modules.
12:00-1:00 Lunch Break
1:00-5:00 Ceramic tile installation theory and techniques - (continued from the previous lesson)
Day 4
8:00-9:30 Expansion joint materials and placement: The instructor will discuss and demonstrate proper construction of movement accommodation joints and installation of pre-made joints and edge protection systems. A brief discussion will also be held on crack suppression and joint relocation.
Learning objective:
* Recommended placement of movement accommodation joints
* Proper construction of joints
* Techniques for dealing with cracks and joints affecting the aesthetics of the installation
9:00-12:00 Ceramic tile installation theory and techniques - (continued from the previous lesson)
12:00-1:00 Lunch break
1:00-5:00 Ceramic tile installation theory and techniques - (continued from the morning lesson).
Day 5
8:00-10:00 Grouting and finishing techniques - The instructor will discuss and demonstrate various grouts, grouting, and finishing materials and techniques.
Learning objective:
* Understand how to select, mix, apply and finish grouts
10:00-12:00 Grouting and finishing techniques Students will use this time to
grout modules.
Learning objective:
* Understand basic cementitious grouting procedures.
12:00-1:00 Lunch
1:00-2:00 Sealers and maintenance. In this session sealers and proper methods of ceramic tile floor care will be discussed.
Learning objective:
* Understand the use of sealers and floor care
2:00-4:00 Demolition of tile work in modules
Students will observe for compliance to industry guidelines while removing and disposing of materials installed in modules.
4:00-5:00 Final Question and Answer session
