Hi Nancy - it could be one of a couple of things:
Real BA would not stain because it is impervious. Some people still seal this material because they feel that "it could not hurt anything" or they just plain do not know any better. Quite often the sealer residue on BA will do some funky things like appear lighter when it interacts with some acids or other chemicals. These lighter spots could be remedied by removing the sealer residue.
The other option was that you never had a true BA. The stone you have was "doctored" to appear black in order to be sold as something it is not. The lighter spot you have now could be the actual color of the stone. In this case you have 2 optios: Poultice the entire counter surface to become lighter and live with it, or try to get the tops replaced with the real thing.
