this is common on lighter color stones, but they usually dry out and clear up after a week or two. the fact thats its been just shy of 2 months makes me think that topshop's idea could be very possible. did you feel the surface? does it feel gritty, or is it smooth like it should be. sometimes people dont clean up properly after grouting and it will leave a very light haze when it dries. pretty much every time we do a shower with light stone, there are grey spots from the thinset for a week or two.
what would help a lot is if you can find out exactly what they used to put the splash up.
