Hey Anthony. I'm right there with ya practicing away. I've found spending more time at 1000 and 2000 will get a deeper polish even though it seems like forever. Working w\ Black Absolute I 'll get through 150, 300 and just count on spending a bit more time at 500 to make sure I' don't get any gray hazes. 1k, 2k ,3k more passes at each step.
I have a gloss meter and that seems to help figuring out where I'm at.
The granite scratch- From what I've learned here you're honing will start below 500 (150)depending on the depth and you might have to back down a step if your demo doesn't eliminate the scratch. That's why you want to keep your working area small. Nothing like having to polish the whole piece for a 1\2 inch scratch.
